Remembering Coach Eula Cole

Tribute written by her daughter, Sara (’79)

Eula H. Cole Gooby, 86 years old, formerly of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away peacefully on September 24, 2019, at Heritage Court Scottsdale, Scottsdale, AZ.

Eula was born in Des Moines to Earl and Nora Haver. She was a graduate of Roosevelt, after which she attended Drake University. There, she was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. Upon her graduation, she taught physical education at her alma mater, TRHS. She was cheerleader sponsor, Leaders Club, synchronized swimming coach and of course the Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team coach. As a coach, she had a drive to be the best, which she instilled in her students and players, many of whom were still in contact with her prior to her death.

Eula was a no-nonsense kind of person. You knew exactly where you stood with her. Because of this, she had an incredible group of friends. She always was trying out new cookie or pie recipes and made sure her friends favorites were always on hand to sample them.

Eula is survived in death by her only daughter, Sara Lee Cole of Florida and her ever-present, faithful companion, “Amigo,” who will miss her greatly. She will now join her parents James Earl and Nora Haver; siblings Maxine, Jim, Lois, and Janis; her husbands, Chester G. Cole and Harry B. Gooby.

Her quick wit stayed with her until the end. Those that knew her will always remember her favorite sayings. For now, ride on Eula, we will catch up with you later!
