Reviving the Natatorium

The TRHS Foundation, in coordination with DMPS, is pursuing the opportunity to upgrade the natatorium at Roosevelt High School. Despite serving thousands of student athletes and spectators each year, the aging facility has endured decades of deferred maintenance. These improvements will enhance the experience of student athletes and their dedicated supporters by providing a welcoming and inspirational environment for practice, meets, and performances.

-
HVAC improvements to reduce humidity and overheating while improving air flow and overall comfort for athletes and spectators.
-
Removal of wood slatted ceiling, replacing with gypsum and decorative ceiling elements depicting the illusion of swimmers through the water.
-
Replacement of all lighting in pool and spectator areas.
-
Replacement of pool decking.
-
Removal of wood slat walls, replacing with impact-resistant gypsum.
-
Repainting and sealing of the remaining tile walls.
-
Installation of a new scoreboard and video monitors.
-
Refinishing wooden spectator bleachers and concrete risers in the spectator area.
-
Enhancing the space with decorative elements and graphic installations to enhance school spirit.
Improvements will include:
why is private support needed?
Raising private dollars to support a public school often raises the question:

Why do I need to donate when I pay taxes to support our schools?

While Roosevelt continues to deliver an exceptional educational and extracurricular experience, enhancing the school's physical environment and competing with the new facilities of suburban schools is challenging for the district alone.

Roosevelt is over 100 years old. Updates are consistently needed to remain relevant and ensure a lasting legacy in our community.

It is important to note that this capital project is a collaborative effort with Des Moines Public Schools. The district is taking a leading role in funding this project. Additionally, generous gifts have been secured from the Ruan Family Foundation and Prairie Meadows.
