Theatre Department Excels at State Competition

Updated: May 4, 2020

In early February, the TRHS Theatre Department hit it out of the park at the IHSSA State Large Group contest held in Waukee. Of the ten groups Roosevelt brought, five groups received straight-1 ratings, two with a composite-1 rating, one group with a composite-2 rating, and two with a straight-2 ratings. This represents the most All-State nominations for Roosevelt in the past decade!

Of some 120 entries, Roosevelt’s Musical Theatre group, the Falsettos (Gary McCall, Henry Vermeer, Ada Fender, Emma Phomvisay), rec

eived an Outstanding, straight-1 rating. Out of more than 150 entries, Roosevelt’s Ensemble Acting scene, “Michael & Kay” (Sam Beaumont and Maren Grant), was also given the prestigious honor to perform at All-State, after receiving the Outstanding, straight-1 rating.

Roosevelt’s Short Film entry, “Larry The Dino” by senior Zach Brewer, also received an Outstanding, straight-1 rating. In addition, his film was chosen to be screened at All-State —a top honor! The judges only picked four films out of the more than 100 submissions. And at the All-State Festival, held February 22 in Ames, Brewer’s short film was selected as the All-State winner.

HUGE congrats to Mr. Davenport and his team for this success!
